Is Chemical Engineering chemistry?
Chemistry
Chemists study molecules and chemical reactions. This deep understanding enables them to create new substances of industrial, agricultural or medical value and explore the conditions required to produce them.
However, chemists are not equipped to design machines to produce chemicals on a commercial scale.
Chemical engineers and chemistry
Chemical engineers do not have such a thorough knowledge of chemistry but do understand the principles of bench-scale chemistry reactions.
Why chemical engineers are useful
Chemical engineers can converse with chemists and are central members of research and development teams turning new ideas into the safe, efficient, reliable equipment required to make money.
Chemical engineers use additional knowledge of the flow and transfer of mass and heat to meet challenges on all scales, from machines making tonnes per hour to molecular and particle assembly.
